FAQ

When are the dances?
We dance on the first Sunday afternoon of every month from 4pm - 7pm and the third Saturday evening of every month from 7pm-10pm. We also hold an "Advanced Dance" every fifth Sunday afternoon from 4pm - 7pm.

Where are the dances held?
Dances are held at the lovely, historic, Thelma Boltin Center in downtown Gainesville, FL. The center was named for Thelma A Boltin, Florida folklorist and educator and founder of the Florida Folk Festival. The Thelma Boltin Center features sprung wood dance floor.

How much does it cost to attend a dance?
We pay hall rental and insurance, a small stipend to our bands, callers, sound technicians, and child-care providers. It costs approximately $800 to hold a dance. We encourage everyone to chip in as much as possible, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Suggested donation is $10, $5 for ages 16 to 25, and free for dancers 15 and under. If you can pay more, please do! If you don't have that much, give what you can. NOTE: Some dances that feature bands/callers who travel a long way to play/call for us will have a suggested donation of $12, or $7 for ages 16 to 25.

Are dogs allowed in the Boltin Center?
No, the City of Gainesville does not allow dogs (with the exception of seeing eye dogs) in the Thelma Boltin Center. Please contact the City of Gainesville Parks Recreation & Cultural Affairs if you have further questions about this issue.

Is child care provided?
Yes, child care is provided as a service to our dancers for children who do not wish to dance, or who do not wish to dance the entire night. Suggested donation is $5 per child which goes to our child-care provider. Child-care service begins approximately 30 minutes prior to the main contra dance and continues for the duration as long as there are children to look after. The child-care provider is allowed to leave at the intermission of the dance if there are no children to care for at that time.

Are snacks provided?
Dancers bring snacks to share, so if possible, bring something yummy! Also, bring a cup or water bottle to cut down on waste.
